Year 12 your tasks

You should all complete the tasks up to the treatment by the end of the holiday. (Monday 5th November). All tasks are set on the blog. E-mail me if there are any issues.

Research the three types of printing- hand crafted, mechanical and digital. Explain the different techniques within these types and the technologies used, providing examples of each.
 
Research why this industry so important and what are the challenges facing it in the 21st century. Consider why it is so important- printed literature wherever you look, education, health, politics without print? How has it changed in the 21st century? Advent of internet, blackberries, desk top publishing; is the role of mechanical printing still valid? Will we always need mechanical printing? Think about books, newspapers, magazines etc?

·         What job opportunities are open to people in the Print industry? What types of contracts are offered? You will need to look at adverts for the print industry- are the contracts permanent, casual etc?
·         What professional bodies are affiliated with the industry? Unions like NUJ etc?
·         What are the legal and ethical issues that affect this industry? Explore the Press Complaints Commission site; use your notes from our visit
·         What do you think are the responsibilities and obligations that a journalist holds? NUJ has some information on this including the code of conduct

Produce some mock ups of articles that you have written for different audiences for example for children, teenagers, adults with different tastes.
- how is language, layout, colour etc affected by the audience you are targeting?

6. Produce a series of letters to and from a magazine producer discussing your ideas for a new magazine and agreeing on the final product

Produce a 2000 treatment for your magazine explaining in detail your proposals for the factual copy, the design layout, illustrations, competitions, and marketing strategies to ensure the magazine is commercially viable. Please include mock ups of pages as examples for each category (design layout/ copy/ illustrations/ marketing/ competitions). You will also need to provide evidence of marketing & advertising meetings as with the letters in your previous task

The Treatment (2000 words)
Below is a checklist for your treatment (you should not be ‘reinventing the wheel’ but gathering all your preproduction work together:
·         Introduction to your project. Explain about the magazine project and who is involved and what how you intend to run the project- who is involved? Who is supporting the project? Budget? Sponsors including advertising revenue?
·         How do your ideas for a magazine fit in to the values and beliefs for the project of your client What is the schedule for production?
·         How did your research inform your decisions on design and layout; colours and typeface; illustrations; printing methods? How much is being digitally produced and how much mechanically produced?
·         What issues do you foresee when producing your magazine and what contingencies have you put in place?
·         Explain more about the team involved and what qualifications do they hold?
·         What is your message; what are you trying to convey?
·         How did you choose your experts or feature writers and how will these influence the audience?
·         Explain in depth the production process?
·         What is your outline budget and how will you ensure that your project is sustainable over time?
·         Summarise your project and assure your client that they can trust your company and you can bring the project in on time and to budget.
Remember: You will need to explain in detail your proposals for the factual copy, the design layout, illustrations, competitions, and marketing strategies to ensure the magazine is commercially viable. Please include mock ups of pages as examples for each category (design layout/ copy/ illustrations/ marketing/ competitions). You will also need to provide evidence of marketing & advertising meetings and any contact with companies.
 
 
7.
Produce a 1000 word production plan for your college magazine explaining what technology will be needed to produce the magazine and what qualities you think your magazine needs to imbibe to ensure that it is an effective factual communication; please include in this plan time schedules/ deadlines and roles and responsibilities within the group.
This task will need an introductory paragraph that discusses how you will ensure your magazine becomes an effective communication- you will need to discuss layout and design, colours and type and also editing and proofreading etc. You will then need to draw up a production plan that covers the research gathering to magazines returning from the printers.

 Produce a magazine according to the design brief agreed at your meetings with your clients.

Produce a 2000 word evaluation of your  magazine. Use the evaluation model to produce this.

2.      Who was your target audience and what research did you carry out to establish what kind of magazine they would read?
3.      How did you adjust your ideas to meet the brief and the target audience?
4.      What were the successes of your production?- explain in detail key elements of the magazine and how you achieved them.
5.      What would you change in terms of the production in terms of targeting your audience more closely or do you think that you have already achieved this?
6.      How did you fully utilise the technology and were there any issues between the digital element and the mechanical printing?
7.      When were you most successful; working on your own or working in collaboration?
8.      What constraints did working with a larger group place on you?
9.      What feedback have you received from the first edition?
10.  What is the ideal team to assemble for a magazine production and what advice would you give others starting their own magazine?

Based on the work you have completed in Year 1 produce a personal career development portfolio with examples of your best pieces of work and a CV which you can take to interviews.

Task 1

50.3 Consider a number of different audiences and how printed material is designed with the audience in mind. Produce an annotated report on a variety of printed material that clearly targets different audiences. Produce some mock ups of articles that you have written for different audiences.

50.1/ 50.2: Carry out some primary and secondary research to gather information about your target audiences’ reading habits and their needs and wants with regard to the magazine. Include research on stakeholders; for example parents/ governors/ teachers etc. Ensure you store and manage the research and tag appropriately.

Stakeholders

 Include research on stakeholders; for example sponsors/ advertisers etc. You will need to use your research to form your ideas about the design, layout and content of the magazine. Ensure you store and manage the research and tag appropriately. Remember it is needed as evidence so electronic storage will need to be backed up.Evidence of completed questionnaires and surveys from stakeholders (can be fictitious)

Tasks for Magazine Research task 5

You will need to do the following tasks for your magazine research:
1. Produce an ideas sheet for a magazine of your choice. Decide on
  • content
  • advertising
  • target audience (remember for the target audinece you need to state whether male/ female, and then consider the psychographics, geodemographics, socio economic status etc (see pages 50/51)
2. Market research; research what other magazines are being sold in the genre of your magazine (your competitors). Write a report on content, layout and design, advertising etc. Gather evidence of readers from www.nrs.co.uk

3. Find out about your target audience and their needs and wants; this could be using questinnaires and surveys. Compile tables of the results and remember to gather both quantitative and qualitative data

4. All your work should be presented using a header with your production name and logo, title of production, date, your name and client's name (as per examples in the classroom)

Consider a number of different audiences and how printed material is designed with the audience in mind. Produce an annotated report on a variety of front pages of magazines that clearly target different audiences (teenager, child male, female, general). Produce some mock ups of front pages for these audiences.
Collect a selection of articles for different genres and then write a selection (three) for different audiences. 200 words

Unit 3 Research Learning Outcomes

For this unit you need to show that you:
  1. understand what the research techniques are for example; the difference between production and market research and the differences between primary and secondary research; what research methods are available and what type of data can be gathered (qualitative & qualitative); and what research institutions can be accessed to gather data.
  2. be able to apply these methods to your own research for your documentary ie: gathering secondary research and primary research on your topic.
  3. can present a PowerPoint explaining the above.
